Pharmacotherapy

The best treatment programs provide a combination of therapies and other services to meet the needs of the individual patient.

At Challenges Addiction Treatment Center we provide medicines for the treatment of Mood Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Personality Disorders, Alcohol Addiction/Dependence, Substance Addiction/Dependence and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Treatment medications, such as methadone, LAAM, and naltrexone, are available for individuals addicted to opiates. Nicotine preparations (patches, gum, nasal spray) and bupropion are available for individuals addicted to nicotine.

Most of the medicines do produce a psychoactive change within the individual’s perception, mood, thought patterns and behavior. Medications, such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or neuroleptics, may be critical for treatment success when patients have co-occurring mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, or psychosis.

We cannot always know which medicine is likely to help a specific individual, so it is important to be persistent until we find the medicine that is successful for a client.
